At Good Timber we like to make use of just about any leftover timber apart from saw shavings (although, you can buy a 'big bag' of shavings for £5 if you must - very useful for animal bedding, soaking up oil and to bulk up your compost) everything else is turned into an Official Off-cut.
These are available in the following formats:
Planed Off-cutsTypically straight edged, planed pieces, individually priced, structurally sound but maybe with the odd knot or crack. We do sometimes put out pieces with considerable defects if we think they may be of interest because of an intriguing shape or nice grain pattern; because we're reasonable people we always include an allowance for defects in the price. Bulk DealsIf we have quite a lot of off-cuts of one particular timber type, we collect them on a pallet and put the details on our bulk deals page These off-cuts are usually from 1" stock, they may be rough-sawn or planed and can range from 50mm to 300mm in width. None of them are longer than 1.2 metres (the length of a standard pallet). They are typically priced at half to a quarter of the timber's retail cubic foot price. All off-cuts on a bulk deal should be usable to the general woodworker; we don't put rubbish on the pallets. |
Tubbed Off-cutsThese are rough-sawn bowl or spindle blank squares for woodturning with minor defects. These are good value for newcomers to woodturning as they make inexpensive practice pieces. You can cram as much as you can into one of the polythene bags provided (without splitting it), as long as you can carry it out the door. European tubbed off-cuts: £20.00 per polythene bag |
