Detail gouges are for very fine work between spindles.
The Spindle Gouge is the general workhorse of all woodturners, and it is mainly used for spindle turning, such as chair legs, balusters and the like.
However, Spindle Gouges also find ready use for facing cuts, shallow hollowing, drilling and beading, and with a bit of regrinding, can also make very effective hollowing tools for box-making.
Spindle gouges generally have shallower flutes than bowl gouges and are consequently not as rigid, reflecting the lower loads that they have imposed upon them. This allows good shaving clearance, whilst the fingernail profile ensures that the wings are well back from the workpiece, allowing good manoeuvrability.
